Divination is the art of listening. It is the practice of asking spirit, ancestors, and the unseen to speak then interpreting the language they choose. Every culture across time has practiced divination, because humans have always longed to understand the unseen currents shaping their lives.
For Black women, divination has always been more than curiosity. It has been survival, strategy, and spiritual resistance.
Our ancestors carried their tools across oceans:
In West Africa, the Yoruba Ifá system used cowrie shells to communicate with the orishas.
In the Congo, bones were cast to reveal guidance from spirits.
Across the Diaspora, Black rootworkers and conjure women used playing cards, Bible verses, dreams, and omens.
In New Orleans and beyond, Tarot cards blended with Hoodoo and Vodou to create unique practices of prophecy.
